In-the-goal netcam shot
I've mentioned before that the one killer football shot I'm still waiting to get is a netcam shot of a goal with the camera actually inside the goal. I don't think I'm ready to cross it off the list just yet, but I got close today.

This isn't a brilliant shot but it does have a few things going for it, especially the way the penalty-taker is framed by the goalie. Hopefully, if nothing else, it will help to raise the bar of what the local papers demand of their sports shooters. Nobody else around here is trying anything like this, and they really should be.
After considering the various clamps and protective case options, I'd decided that the only safe way to do this shot was to lie down at the side of the goal and poke the lens through the net, then get the hell out of the way if either the ball or the goalie came in my direction. So that's exactly what I did. Got the shot, nobody got hurt, no gear broken. Result!

Hi Stuart, I’ll try to get some action shots posted on the site later in the week, along with the team photos.

I like this shot. Admittedly, this is the first year I’ve shot soccer (ahem, football), and I’ve been trying to emulate your behind-the-net style. However, I got asked a couple times to not stand behind the net while the game is in progress. Do you ever get that?

Hi Bryon,
The refs & players at these amateur games are good for letting me experiment with the behind-the-net pics. But remember what level we’re talking about here. There are usually kids and dogs running around, sometimes even running onto the pitch. These aren’t tightly controlled environments! I’d never be allowed to try shots like this at a professional game. There’s not much you can do at those games apart from set-up a remote camera a few feet behind the net.
I’ve still got one more netcam idea to try but I’ll not mention it just yet because, as far as I know, nobody else has done it. (I don’t think anyone has done an in-the-goal shot either but the idea was basically there, just difficult to execute. This other idea is totally new.)
Have you got any decent netcam shots yet? Not easy, are they? Sometime this year I hope to try shooting hockey with remotes. I think netcam shots of that game should be great. I’ve seen some from ice hockey that were much better than the usual football stuff. Football goals are too big, really, you need to shoot wide and then you end up with a load of dead space.

Rambled on and forgot to answer your question Bryon!
No, I’ve not been told to move away from the net, although once when I set-up a flash on a light stand at the side of the goal (a few feet back from the line) I was asked to move it.

Thanks for the feedback, Andy. I’ll post the only decent net shot I have. It’s nothing great, but its value increased the moment after I shot it and was told to not shoot behind the net.
Thanks again.
