EuroDroid reports that Vodafone will launch an app store for Android phones, to fill in the European gaps where Google hasn’t yet launched the official Android download service. Set to launch in June. Worrying quote:
All apps will be pre-selected and tested by [Vodafone's after-sales processor] Arvato Mobile for compatibility with our devices.
Sounds a lot like an Android version of Apple’s locked-down App Store.
Barry O’Neil, ex-President of Namco Bandai Network Europe, wrote an article last week suggesting that it could be wise for Google to "hand over the entire management of the Android Market to carriers, OEMs and trusted publishers".
I’d prefer the whole thing to stay as open and independent as possible. That’s why I’m moving from iPhone to Android in the first place.
