First Time Flying

No updates for months, I know. Terrible. But now’s as good a time as any to get back to posting. This is the first in a series of images that I’m producing for t-shirts.

Dundee United win Scottish Cup Final

So… Ross County’s dream of winning the Scottish Cup Final went down in a blaze of tangerine with Dundee United’s 3-0 victory at Hampden Park on Saturday.
I had a strategy for covering this match. The strategy was to not cover the match at all. I knew that most papers would have their own photographers there More >

Compromise. I hate compromise!

Usually I like the tough jobs because I’ll always do whatever it takes to get the shot, while the happy-snapper part-timers won’t even bother trying. But today, due to time constraints, I had to settle for run-of-the-mill scene-setting shots.
The story was about a glider that had crashed in a forest. By the time I reached More >

RayFire tutorial in 3D Artist magazine

This month’s issue of 3D Artist magazine includes my first 3D tutorial, which is a beginner’s guide to using the 3DS Max plugin RayFire for automatic iterative geometry fragmentation, along with NVIDIA’s PhysX plugin for physics simulation.

Here’s the final render of the animation created in the tutorial:

Jordan Ross Memorial Cup **UPDATED**

This afternoon I covered the Jordan Ross Memorial Cup in Invergordon, a charity football match between Ross Youth Group and Motherwell Under-17s, held in memory of 16-year-old local boy Jordan who died of cancer in July 2009. The match raised funds for cancer charity CLIC Sargent.
I love this candid photo of Jordan’s mum Kerry presenting More >

Strathspey Tens rugby tournament

This afternoon I covered the Strathspey Tens rugby tournament featuring teams from around Scotland and Northern Ireland. Got some pretty good pics, especially considering that I haven’t photographed a rugby game in 4 or 5 years. I’d now like to cover rugby more often! Great fun.

Review of HTC Desire as alternative to Apple iPhone

My search for an alternative to Apple’s iPhone has been long and frustrating.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve walked out of a highstreet phone shop, disappointed by devices that promised so much but turned out to be flimsy toys with sluggish software and unresponsive touchscreens.
Anyone who has similarly quested an escape from Apple’s More >

Court case and "substantial fine" looming for not obeying non-existent road signs

Last month I wrote about an incident in Glasgow when I — and many other drivers — were stopped by the police and fined for driving in an unmarked bus lane. Basically the two police officers on duty acknowledged that the signs and road markings which should have been there, didn’t actually exist.
But they had More >

Vue cinema pushing me towards film piracy

For years, PC games companies have been pushing me towards pirating their games. Anti-piracy technology (DRM) has become so invasive that some games hardly work at all for legitimate customers, and we risk our computers being damaged if we dare to install a shop-bought game.
Meanwhile pirates get DRM-free copies that work perfectly and don’t do More >
